Mark Houston

IRON MOUNTAIN — Mark Loren Houston, 68, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Jan. 16, 2025 at home in Iron Mountain.

The son of William and Mary Ann (Reagan) Houston, Mark was one of seven siblings and grew up in Simi Valley, Calif. when they could still run free through the miles of orange and walnut groves.

Mark loved root beer floats, played the upright bass and as a teen he cut out the back of a VW bug and turned it into a “truck”. He always enjoyed a good time and inspired others to do the same.

In his early 20s Mark worked his way up to Alaska. He landed in Fairbanks, and for the next 40 years he worked in the taxi industry. Eventually Mark decided to return to the lower 48. His first stop was Spokane, Wash. to be by his brother John. Then he made his way to Iron Mountain, where his sisters Nancy and Ruthie were nearby.

Mark proved to be very community minded. He played cribbage at both the community center and local bowling alley. He helped form a chess group (meets Fridays at noon at the community center).

He frequented the Braumart Theatre and would be seen golfing with his buddies during the summer months. He loved football and followed the Lions. He was excited about this year’s playoffs.

Mark is survived by four siblings, Nancy, John, Matt, Ruthie and his sister-in-law and dear friend, Marilyn Houston, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mark will be greatly missed.

Condolences may be expressed to the family of Mark Loren Houston online at www.ernashfuneralhomes.com.
