1937-2025

FLORENCE, Wis. — Richard Lee Meyers, 88, of Florence, Wis., peacefully passed away on Monday, April 28, 2025, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain after a long battle with cancer.

Richard (also known as Dick, Hermie, or Jammar) was born in Florence, on April 8, 1937. He married Nora Witynski on July 14, 1962, and they had four children.

Dick served in the U.S. Airforce and later worked at Wisconsin Electric in hydraulics. After retirement he and Nora spent their winters in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., where they made many lifelong friends. Dick made friends easily and filled up a room with much laughter. Many would gather around him to listen to his much embellished stories. He never let a few facts get in the way of a good story.

Dick lived life to the fullest and was very active. He loved walking in the woods, riding his bike, golfing and hunting. Dick was an avid gardener, a passion passed down from his Mother, and many enjoyed the fruits of his labor.

Dick is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nora Meyers; his children, Michelle Valeski, Robert (Janna) Meyers, and Tricia (Todd) Moreaux; grandchildren, Aimee (John) Peters, Andrew (Danielle) Valeski, Adam (Lindsey) Valeski, Jacob Meyers, and Hayden Meyers; a sister-in-law, Sandra Witynski; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and beloved Kitty Honeybee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Gertrude Meyers; his daughter, Julie Meyers; a son-in-law, Ted Valeski; along with three brothers and three sisters.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center for their outstanding care and kindness.

A memorial donation was made in Dick’s honor to his favorite charity, the Wounded Warrior Project.

Visitation will be held 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, May 2 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Florence with a funeral Mass to follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Fr. Soja Joseph will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Florence.
