KINGSFORD — James Edward “Jim” House, 89, passed away on June 19, 2025, in Florence, Wis.

Born on Jan. 26, 1936, in Kingsford, Jim lived a life marked by adventure, achievement, and an unwavering passion for the outdoors and the sport of ski jumping.

Jim’s journey into ski jumping began in 1952 with the Kiwanis Ski Club in Iron Mountain. A pioneer in his field, he was among the earliest American jumpers to adopt the innovative “Finn” style of jumping. His dedication and fearless approach to the sport culminated in a breakthrough year in 1958 when he earned a place on the FIS United States World Championship Ski Jumping Team. That same year, Jim competed at Vikersund in Norway — one of the most prestigious venues for ski flying — where he soared to a third-place overall finish against some of the world’s best. He also tied the hill record in Falun, Sweden during that European tour.

Jim’s legacy extended far beyond his competitive years. He remained a fixture at Giant Pine Mountain for decades, mentoring young athletes and sharing his love for ski jumping. Whether taking newcomers out to dinner before tournaments or offering guidance around the clubhouse, Jim’s presence was both inspiring and generous. His lifelong contributions to the sport were honored with his induction into the American Ski Jumping Hall of Fame — a testament to both his athletic excellence and enduring commitment to ski jumping.

Outside of sports, Jim served four years as a military police officer in the United States Marine Corps. Following his service, he built a successful career with WB Thomson Co., where he rose through the ranks to become the company’s top salesman before retiring.

Jim was a man of many talents and interests. An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in hunting and fishing across all seasons. He was also an accomplished scuba diver and golfer. At home and among friends, Jim was known for his culinary skills and love of cooking. A master gardener and exceptional carpenter, he brought creativity and craftsmanship into every project he touched. His enthusiasm for skiing extended beyond ski jumping — he enjoyed both cross-country and downhill skiing well into later life.

Travel was another passion that Jim shared with his beloved wife, Christine. Together they explored destinations across Costa Rica, Cuba, China, Hong Kong, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Mexico — each trip adding new stories to their shared journey.

Jim had a larger-than-life personality that left an impression wherever he went. Known for striking up conversations with friends and strangers alike, he had an innate ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Christine House; daughter Ellen (Randy) Harvath; son Robert (Monica) House; stepson Brandon (Joanna) Nicholas; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward House; his mother, Ella Willing; stepfather George Willing; sister Mary Ann Dane; and his son, James House Jr.

A celebration of Jim’s remarkable life will be held at a later date.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire future generations on snow-covered hillsides around the world. Cheers to Jim!
