Mary L. Dulan

KINGSFORD — Mary L. Dulan, of Kingsford, passed away Monday, July 7, 2025, at Optalis Health & Rehabilitation in Kingsford.

Mary was born on July 28, 1947, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Dorothy and Louie Fontecchio, and graduated from Florence High School in 1965. She married John C. Dulan on March 2, 1968, at American Martyrs Catholic Church.

Johnny and Mary enjoyed raising their many beagles. They would also go trout fishing together; Mary loved fly fishing for the brookies. The two also enjoyed traveling and getting together with their friends.

Mary graduated from Northern Michigan University with a master’s degree in education in 1976 and began her teaching career at North Dickinson in 1972, where she taught until coming to Breitung Township School District in 1987. Mary loved teaching. She taught preschool through the college level; teaching was her passion.

Mary represented the learning disability teachers from the Upper Peninsula in the PBS television program “The Puzzled Children,” which followed the national program for learning disabilities headed by Marlo Thomas. She believed that all students had a future, for all students had something to give to our society. She was proud of each of the students’ accomplishments and would often get phone calls throughout the years after their graduation.

Mary also authored and published the book “My Frontier Days on the Menominee Range” in 1972 and was nominated for Outstanding Young Women of America. She authored the Iron Mountain Centennial book “Born from Iron” in 1978 and was recognized and honored by Gov. William G. Milliken for her historical contributions to the state of Michigan in 1979.

Mary is survived by her husband, John.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Theresa Way.

There will be no funeral or memorial services held.
