IRON MOUNTAIN — Daniel Edward Stanczak, 76, of Iron Mountain, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025, en route to Green Bay, Wis.
Dan was born on Oct. 17, 1948, son of the late Henry and Margaret (Larson) Stanczak in Braddock, Pa., but grew up in Houston. Dan served 10 years in the United States Army, later obtaining his PhD in neuropsychology as well as a master’s degree in music. He worked as a clinical neuropsychologist until his retirement in 2011.
He married the love of his life and soulmate, Elizabeth Hunt, on Sept. 11, 1991, in Lake Tahoe, Nev., and they enjoyed 33 years of marriage while raising six wonderful children together. After many years in Texas, Dan and Elizabeth relocated to Iron Mountain.
Dan was an exceptional man, having helped others reach success in the field of neuropsychology as a professor or adjunct faculty in multiple universities, Trinity University, Saint Mary’s University, California School of Professional Psychology, and Our Lady of the Lake University. He wrote many professional papers, conducted and completed many research projects, supervised and participated in the writing of many dissertations while, most impressively, he wrote a paper with one of the founding fathers of modern neuropsychology, Ralph Reitan. Dan developed tests that were extensions of instruments used to perform neuropsychological evaluations. He was a brilliant man! He was a respected member within the field of neuropsychology. In fact, he was loved by many while liked by all.
He enjoyed composing music and writing political satire. While his plans to publish his work were left unfinished, he did get recognition from the Army Band for his musical efforts, as well as recognition from the University of Houston concert band. He could do almost anything. He was everything to his wife.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Elizabeth; son Karl Stanczak; daughters Heather Chavez and Astrid Stanczak; stepson Timothy Dixon; stepdaughters Kimberly Dixon and Lisa Thomas; brother Drake (Lori) Stanczak; sister Donna (Bruce) Crawford; as well as numerous other family members and special friends.
In addition to his parents, Henry and Margaret, Dan was preceded in death by his two beloved brothers, David Stanczak and Dennis Stanczak.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. A memorial service with full military honors will follow at 5 p.m. The Rev. James Danielson will officiate.
