Dennis L. Mitchell

IRON RIVER — Dennis L. Mitchell, 80, of Iron River, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, at Aspirus Hospital in Iron River.

Born on Oct. 9, 1944, in Ishpeming, Dennis was the cherished only child of Benjamin and Jean Mitchell. He took much pride in his Finnish heritage, and being “SISU strong” carried him through every season of life.

Dennis lived a life dedicated to family, hard work and love of country. He was proud to serve in the U.S. Army and was a true patriot who never failed to fly his American flag. His career as a mechanic working in underground tunnels with the Local 139 Union took him around the world, where he contributed to many important projects. No matter where life took him, he carried himself with integrity, loyalty, and was always willing to help those he knew would appreciate his generosity.

When he wasn’t working, Dennis found joy in the simple things. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and loved cheering them on from his garage. He treasured time with family and friends, especially Wednesday night “Happy Hour” — where, over rye whiskey and blackberry brandy, stories were shared, laughter flowed, and even the world’s biggest problems seemed just a little easier to solve.

Dennis will be lovingly remembered for his honesty, his unwavering values, his hardworking spirit, and above all, his devotion to family. His presence brought strength and warmth to everyone who knew him, and his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Jean Mitchell, and first wife Ruby Mitchell in 2009.

Dennis was blessed with and survived by his second wife, Dianne Mitchell; they were married in 2016. Upon their marriage, Dianne’s family became Dennis’ family. Dennis became a father figure to Sam and Annie Blazier, Rob and Justina Blazier and Ryan Blazier and Becky Blazier. He became a loving grandfather to Lacey, Dominic, Kyle, Zach, Abbie, Brenden, Melinda, Bailey, Tommy, and Courtney and a loving great-grandfather to Sophie and Willow.

Dennis is also survived by aunt, Maryann Mitchell; nieces Shelly, Brandy and Mick; many cousins; and special friend and neighbor, Steve Moln.

The family would like to thank Dr. Patton and all of the staff at Aspirus Hospital in Iron River for their high level of compassion and care of Dennis and his family members.

Family and friends are invited to the visitation from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Nash Funeral Home in Crystal Falls. Funeral services will immediately follow at noon at the funeral home. Burial at the Ishpeming Cemetery will be at a later date.

Though our hearts ache with loss, we rejoice in the blessing of having known and loved Dennis. He leaves behind a legacy of love that will live on in all of us.
