Jean (Johnson) Thekan
IRON MOUNTAIN — Jean (Johnson) Thekan, 97, of Iron Mountain, passed away peacefully on Sept. 17, 2025.
Born on March 14, 1928, in Iron Mountain to Charles and Agnes Johnson, Jean grew up surrounded by 12 siblings, a bustling household that shaped her quick wit and lifelong love of family.
In 1949, she married her high school sweetheart, Joe Thekan, beginning a 73-year adventure of love, hard work and partnership. Together they raised five children, ran businesses side by side, spent summers on Lake Antoine, and presided over lively family gatherings filled with laughter, stories, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting.
Jean is survived by her children, Jinx (Paul), Jan, Jon (Kathy), Jay (Karen), and daughter-in-law, Linda; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, who all carry a spark of her spirit.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings; her beloved Joe; and her son, Jeff.
Jean will be remembered for her generous heart, her friendship, her boundless energy, and a sense of humor that could light up a room.
She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church and loved nothing more than lifting her voice in the choir.
An avid reader and supporter of the arts, she also painted, designed, and hosted with flair — always making people feel welcome, and never letting life get too serious.
A springtime service at the First Presbyterian Church of Kingsford, followed by celebration of Jean’s remarkable life, will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean’s name to the Historic Braumart Theater, a place where her love for music and community will live on.
Jean’s family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the staff of Optalis Health for the warmth, respect, and loving care given to our mom.
