Herbert W. Haase

KINGSFORD — Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Herbert W. Haase, 83, of Kingsford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children on Oct. 22, 2025.

He was born in Milwaukee, to Frank and Bertha Haase. After serving in the United States Army he met and married the love of his life, Shirlee V. Sorenson. They shared 46 years together and raised six children.

He was an inspiration, proving it’s never too late to learn something new. As a child Herb “hated” school and was a poor student. But as an adult he was a voracious reader and had an insatiable drive to learn. As a young adult he was introduced to a relationship with Jesus Christ and it changed his trajectory. He became a student of the Bible and a man of deep faith.

He worked many years for the Breitung Township School District. His interests and hobbies were vast. He was an accomplished gardener and frequently gave tours of his picture-perfect hosta and perennial garden. He was a self-taught painter but did not consider himself an artist. He was well known in the community for his nostalgic historic paintings of Iron Mountain, Kingsford and the Upper Penninsula. He loved to paint a memory and received many awards and accolades for his talents. Ice cream — oh, how he loved mint chocolate chip ice cream.

A loving and self-sacrificing father, he is survived by his children, Kathleen (Brian), Naomi, Joel (Teresa), Faith (Luis), Paul, and Sarah; his grandchildren, Elisabeth (Nathan), Jessica (Joshua), Brandt (Jessica), Dieter, Ian, Jacob, Hannah, Jonah, Joseph, Andrew and Matthew; his great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Collin, Joel, Vivienne, Caroline, Channing, Marshall, Theodore, and Alexandria; his sister, Dorothy; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was loved and will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Shirlee; his great-grandson, Samuel; half-brother Willie; and sister Florence.

“Come to me, all who are weary and heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

At Herb’s request no services will be held.
