Richard Ray

NORWAY — Richard Alan Ray, 72, of Norway, passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on April 3, 1953, in Norway, Richard was the third son of the late Betty A. (Caddy) Ray and Robert E. Ray Sr.

After attending Norway High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, earned his GED, and served with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment during the Vietnam War era. For his service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and two Marksman Badges. Wounded in combat, he was awarded the Purple Heart and honorably discharged in 1973.

After the war, Richard returned to Norway, where he pursued many interests, including his passion for computers and love of history. He was also an avid fisherman, with the craft of tying his own flies eventually taking over an entire room in his home. A lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, he was appreciated by everyone who knew him for his immediate smile and endless kindness.

He is survived by his siblings, Robert, Jean, Cindy, Thomas, and Scott; many nieces and nephews; and lifelong friends who will hold his memory close.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his brother John; and his sister, Darlene.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Richard’s friend, Anita, and to the caring, dedicated staff at the Community Living Center of the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center for the compassion they showed him.

A graveside memorial service at Norway Township Cemetery will be announced at a later date.
