Nancy Bal

NORWAY — Nancy Ann Bal, 91, of Norway, passed away on Monday, Nov. 3, 2025, at Maryhill Manor in Niagara surrounded by her family.

Nancy was born on Oct. 1, 1934, in Iron Mountain, the daughter of the late Cecelia (Quinn) and Andrew Lagina. She graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1953. Following graduation she worked at General Controls.

On Oct. 5, 1957, she married Louis Bal at St. Mary & St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. After residing in Iron Mountain for a short time, they moved to Norway where they raised her family.

She was a faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway, and after her children were grown, she went back to work at St. Mary’s rectory. She was proud of her service at the church where she had many fond memories and built lasting friendships.

One of her favorite things to do was visiting friends over coffee. She loved people, but most of all she loved her family. The perfect day for Nancy was having her family over for Sunday dinner. She enjoyed baking, where you could always find goodies on the counter.

She never forgot a birthday. Friends and family could always count on a card from her with the perfect cursive handwriting.

Her kindness and willingness to help others was a special gift. We will miss her smile, laughter and how she made everyone feel special.

She is survived by her six children, Steve Bal, Teresa (Michael) Swanson, Denise (Steve) Feira, Colleen (Pete) Betker, Maureen Bal, and Joe (Terri) Bal; nine grandchildren, Matthew Swanson, Cassie (Alec) Richmond, Tony Feira, Hailee Betker, Samantha Betker, Joshua (Kathy) Vieau, Blake (Nicole) Vieau, Ciara Vieau and Stevie (Andrew) LaFreniere; 10 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; two special nieces, Cindy McRae and Judy White; and many friends including special friend, Maxine.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 10, 2018; along with her brothers, Joseph and Robert Lagina; and sister Mary Jane Conard.

The family would like to thank the staff at Victoria Pines and Maryhill Manor for the wonderful care provided to Nancy during the past few years. They were her angels and filled her days with joy and laughter.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway, with a funeral Mass to follow at 11:30 a.m. at the church. Father Abraham Mupparathara will offer the Mass of Christian Burial, and burial will be at the Norway Township Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nancy’s memory to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry in Norway or Maryhill Manor.
