CRYSTAL FALLS — Walter E. Hagglund, 89, of Crystal Falls, passed away on Monday, Nov. 3, 2025, at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, Wis.
He was born on March 19, 1936, the son of the late Walter and Agnes (Walback) Hagglund. Walt graduated from Crystal Falls High School in 1954. He is a 1959 graduate of Michigan College of Mining and Technology in Houghton, where he earned a degree in mining engineering, with an additional year of study in engineering administration.
Walt served as the city manager of Crystal Falls for 34 years before retiring in 1997 to spend more time with his loved ones. A dedicated community member, he was also part of the Crystal Falls Fire Department for 37 years, contributing to 15 U.P. Firefighters Tournament Championship teams. In retirement Walt loved spending time outdoors, whether cruising around Fortune Lake on his pontoon boat, golfing, or tending to his garden. He also enjoyed cheering on local sports teams at Forest Park and Michigan Tech events and was an avid Detroit Lions fan. Throughout retirement, he remained actively involved with the Lions Club.
On Nov. 26, 1966, Walt married Alice Pintarelli in Crystal Falls, whom he loved deeply and treasured throughout their life together. This month would have marked their 59th wedding anniversary.
Walt is survived by his wife, Alice Hagglund of Crystal Falls; his four grandchildren, Brenda (Tony) Ragio of Crystal Falls, Tracie (Erik) McNichol of East Tawas, Mich., Angela (Ric) Stoor of Waunakee, Wis. and Dennis (Jordyn) Mitchell Jr. of Crystal Falls; six great-grandchildren, Billy and Kelsey Ragio, Connor McNichol, Hattie and Jack Stoor, and Mavrick Mitchell.

Walt was preceded in death by his stepson, Dennis Mitchell Sr. in 2017; and brother Robert Hagglund in 1944.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church in Crystal Falls. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at the church with Pastor D.J. Rasner officiating. The Crystal Falls Fire Department will conduct a pass in review prior to the service at 10:50 a.m. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Crystal Falls.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Walt’s memory may be made to the United Lutheran Church.
