Jay Hoffman

CHANNING — Jay Edward Hoffman, 72, of Channing, peacefully passed away after a nine-month battle with cancer on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025, at home with his family.

He was born on July 5, 1953, in Toledo, Ohio, to John and Ruth Hoffman and graduated from Whiteford High School in 1971. He married Beth Bischoff on Dec. 30, 1972, at St. Michael Lutheran Church in Temperance, Mich. They moved to Channing in September of 1974 and raised their family there. He started in electrical line work as an apprentice in 1971 in lower Michigan and later retired from Michels Electric as a superintendent in 2007.

Jay was an avid hunter, but his passion was training and running his hounds. He was one of the founding members of the U.P. Bear Houndsmen Association and served as vice president for many years. He enjoyed following his grandchildren in all their various interests and looked forward to his family’s annual week-long vacation on Lake Gogebic for the last 15 years.

Jay is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Beth Hoffman of Channing; his children, Matt (Shelly Lindquist) Hoffman of Norway, Katie (George) Wuensch of Crivitz, Wis., and Jolene (Kurt) Kramer of Hardwood; his grandchildren, Lucas, Allison, and Jenna Wuensch of Green Bay, Wis., and Delaney, Spencer, and Trenton Kramer of Hardwood; one sister, Amy Hoffman of Carney; many other family members; and a special nephew, Michael Hoffman of Granite Bluff, who shared his love of hunting with hounds.

Jay was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth Hoffman, and his brother, Jack Hoffman.

Jay met many people over the years through working and hunting who became lifelong friends.

Private family services were held Monday, Jan. 5, at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home with the Rev. Lori Liverance officiating.

While the service was private, the family would appreciate any memorial gifts be made as contributions to the Dickinson County Cancer Unit Loan Closet, 201 E. Breitung Ave., Kingsford, MI 49802.

The family would like to express their gratitude to MMC-Dickinson Hospice for their kindness and support.
