Duane F. Person
Duane F. Person
VIRGINIA, Minn. — Duane F. Person, 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 20, 2026, with his devoted wife of 57 years, Mary, by his side. A man of deep integrity and enduring kindness, Duane’s long life was defined by his commitment to his family, his medical practice, and his lifelong love of music.
Born on Nov. 27, 1931, in Iron Mountain to Nels and Mary Person, Duane’s journey was one of steady purpose. From his early years in Michigan to his decades of service on the Iron Range, he carried with him a tireless work ethic and a heart that was always centered on those he loved most.
Duane’s greatest pride was his family. He was a deeply loving husband to his wife, Mary; their story began at the Virginia Municipal Hospital, where they worked side-by-side before marrying in 1968. Over their 57 years of marriage, they built a life rooted in mutual support and affection. As a father, Duane was a constant presence. He was his children’s biggest supporter, never missing a baseball or football game, a band concert, or a parade. Whether in the stands or on the sidelines, his children always knew they could look up and find him there.
Professionally, Duane was a dedicated orthopedic surgeon who prided himself on his work ethic and professional knowledge. A proud Wolverine, he earned his doctorate of medicine from the University of Michigan. He spent his career serving the Iron Range, beginning at the East Range Clinic in Virginia and continuing through its transition to Essentia Health Services, where he practiced until his retirement at age 68.
Music was the heartbeat of Duane’s life. A talented clarinetist from a young age, he played in dance bands as a young man and was a proud member of the University of Michigan Marching Band. His passion for performance continued throughout his life as a mainstay of the Virginia Community Band. His voice was equally present in the community; he loved to sing and served for time as the director of the choir at Sacred Heart Church.
Even in retirement, his passions followed him. During his years in Apple Valley, he continued to share his musical gifts in community bands and church choirs before returning home to Virginia in 2015 to be near his daughter and her family.
Duane is survived by his beloved wife, Mary (O’Malley) Person; his son, Tony Person; his daughter, Katie (Andy) Peterson; and his four grandchildren, Ian Person, Genevieve Person, William Peterson, and Emmi Peterson. He is also survived by his sister, Anita (William) Laurila; and many nieces and nephews. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, music, and an enduring devotion to those he loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nels and Mary Person; and his parents-in-laws, Charles and Lucille O’Malley.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia, Minn. with the Rev. Father David Forsman as celebrant. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Virginia at a later date.
