Mariann Goodchild
Mariann Goodchild
IRON MOUNTAIN — Mariann Caroline Goodchild peaceably went home to be with her beloved Lord on Jan. 3, 2026, at the age of 90, surrounded by the love and memories of a life well lived.
She was born on Sept. 22, 1935, in Iron Mountain, to Mario and Anna Branz.
Mariann carried throughout her life the strong values of faith, compassion, and devotion that would become the foundation of the woman she was. Her kind heart, unwavering belief in God, and caring spirit touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her.
A proud 1953 graduate of Iron Mountain High School, Mariann dedicated herself to a lifetime of hard work and service to others. She began her working years at her father’s business, Branz Plumbing and Heating Company where she learned the value of commitment, responsibility, and perseverance. Her career eventually led her to the 95th District Court Probation Office, where she worked as a secretary. More than simply performing office duties, Mariann became a compassionate presence to many, offering kindness, encouragement, and words of faith to those who crossed her path.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mario and Anna Branz; her second husband, Gerald (Chum) Goodchild; her first husband, Albert J. Dowdle; her brother, Raymond Branz (Mary); and her two sisters, Delores Fox (Carl) and Patsy Hassler (Herman).
Mariann’s memory will be lovingly carried on by her children, Terrance Dowdle (Monica) and Sherri Dowdle; her stepchildren, Tawn Swanson (Tom), Kerri Hudson (Bruce), Kim Rudolf (John), Vicki Berger (Bob), Tal Goodchild (Sara) and Melissa VanPembrook (Tim); along with many cherished nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought great joy to her life.
For many years, Mariann was a devoted member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, where her strong Christian faith remained an important part of her life. Beyond the church, she quietly gave to others through donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital supporting children and families facing illness and hardship. In her free time, Mariann found joy in dancing, reading, crocheting, and gardening, but brought greater happiness than spending time with her family, whom she loved deeply.
Mom, Mare, Grandma and Auntie will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know and love her. Yet we find comfort in the words she once wrote: “Don’t be sad, I am only on the other side with the Lord.”
A simple gathering in memory of Mariann will be held on Saturday, May 23, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Iron Mountain. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m., with a luncheon to follow.
