BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Stephen Peters of Bloomington, Ill., passed on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the age of 69 in Bloomington.
Steve was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., and adopted by Roy and Evelyn Peters of Quinnesec. They both preceded him in death. Steve was also preceded in death by his good friend, James Olson, when they were teenagers.
He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Vernée; his sister, Cindy of Charlotte, Mich.; two brothers-in-law, Dan (Imm) Zeller of Normal, Ill., and Greg Zeller of Bloomington; and his mother-in-law, Mary Zeller of Bloomington.
Steve graduated from Kingsford High School in Kingsford, and Illinois State University. He began a 20-year career in law enforcement with the Springfield City Police Department. After 20 years of service, he was honored to retire as a lieutenant. After retiring from the city police department, he worked for a few years with the State of Illinois before his permanent retirement in 2018.
Steve and Vernée loved to travel and enjoyed many cruises. Steve also immensely enjoyed annual fishing trips to Canada with his Springfield buddies. He leaves behind many special friends from the Upper Peninsula and Springfield.
A celebration of his life will be held at East Lawn Funeral Home, 1102 Airport Road, Bloomington, at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 23.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Bloomington Red Cross where Steve volunteered.
