Stewart Warmboe
CRYSTAL FALLS — Stewart Olson Warmboe, 85, of Way Dam Resort, Crystal Falls, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2026, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born April 21, 1941 in Duluth, Minn., son of the late Lloyd and Anna (Vick) Warmboe. Stewart graduated from Floodwood High School in 1959 in Floodwood, Minn.
Stewart held many jobs in his life, especially in his younger years. He worked on the docks in Seattle and he worked in various mines in Minnesota and Michigan. He also was a cook on various ore boats that traveled the Great Lakes. He was a logger using Belgian work horses and was a boxer out on the West Coast in his younger years. He owned and operated The Sagola Clubhouse from 1968-1983 and then owned and operated Stewart’s Way Dam Resort from 1983-2003.
Stewart throughout his life had a passion for hunting and fishing, which many of the DNR in the area knew about. He loved his hunting camps, especially his favorite, Caesars Palace. He loved to fish for walleye out on the dam and anything he hunted or caught, he had a delicious recipe for.
He loved to pick berries and apples throughout his years, especially with his grandkids, and he loved to bake cookies with his granddaughters. Even up until this past fall, Stewart loved to be in the woods, cutting firewood with his trusty chainsaw because according to him, “he could never have enough firewood” and was known to always keep his house quite warm. Stewart loved to play cards, especially smear and cribbage. There was never a casino he didn’t love and that casino loved him back with his various donations. Anyone who met Stewart loved his stories. When he spoke, he commanded everyone’s attention and you felt as if you were a part of that story.

He had quite a few poems he would recite, some from actual poets and some he would make up himself. He was always quick witted and could put a smile on anyone’s face. He loved to give the ladies hugs and squeezes, even into his old age. Stewart was a staple at Way Dam, driving around on his 4-wheeler while stopping and visiting anyone who was sitting outside of their cabin. He had a love for all animals, especially his cats who he would call in at night by yelling through the window, “Here kitty kitty, here kitty kitty”.
In his later years, Stewart’s passion was being surrounded by his grandkids. His granddaughters took care of him as much as he took care of them. His grandsons could hardly wait to visit him throughout the years to hear his stories and cut firewood. He loved to feed his deer while watching from his chair under the tree. Stewart was also known to be helpful to anyone in need and there are many people that would see Stewart as a mentor or a father figure. He enjoyed spending time with his extended family. Patience wasn’t one of Stewart’s virtues, especially at supper time. His passion of life and stubbornness will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his four children, Eric Warmboe of Iron Mountain, Chet Warmboe of Crystal Falls, Lisa (Joe) Bandola of Crystal Falls and Scott (Jenn) Wiley of Cresco, Iowa; six grandchildren, Anna, Emma, Brandon (Jamie), Colten, and Reid (Emma) and Shane (Jeanna); three great-grandchildren, Addie, Joey and Ender; one brother, Douglas (Sharon) Warmboe of Crystal Falls; one sister, Mary Kerkala of Negaunee; and nieces and nephews.
Stewart was preceded in death by his son, Matt Warmboe; three siblings, Loyd and Grant Warmboe and Mae Elizabeth “Lisa” Warmboe.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Stewart’s memory May 23 from 1 to 3 p.m., with a service to follow at Nash Funeral Home in Crystal Falls. The Rev. D.J. Rasner will officiate. Burial will be in the Channing cemetery.
The family would like to thank Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson Hospice for all of their help.
