MARQUETTE — Phyllis Agnes Johnson, 88, peacefully passed away on June 11, 2026, at Trillium House in Marquette, surrounded by her loving family.
Born Dec. 12, 1937, in Norway, she was the cherished daughter of Melvin Gray and Dora “Vandervest” Gray.
Phyllis attended school in her hometown of Norway, graduating with fond memories and lifelong friendships. On Aug. 20, 1960, she married Roy Johnson in Norway, beginning a beautiful partnership that brought her much joy and fulfillment.
Throughout her career, Phyllis worked as a secretary for numerous organizations and later served as a secretarial manager for Whispering Wind apartment buildings. Her dedication, professionalism, and warm spirit were hallmarks of her work until her retirement.
A devoted member of St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Manistique, Phyllis found strength and comfort in her faith. She was an active participant in her church community, always lending a helping hand and sharing her kindness with others.
Phyllis embraced life with enthusiasm. She loved knitting, reading, playing cards, working puzzles, cooking, and baking. Above all, she treasured spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, creating lasting memories and bringing joy to all who knew her.
Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Beth (Dale) Moilanen of Gwinn and Karen Gonyea of Manistique; her brother, Robert (Mary) of Wisconsin; her sister, Kathy Honkanen of Wisconsin; grandchildren Corey (McKenzie Mickelson) Gonyea, Kelsy Gonyea, and Matthew (Alana) Moilanen; and great-grandchildren Henrik and Duncan. She also leaves behind many special nieces; nephews; her friend, Pat; adopted “daughters”; friends at Brookridge Assisted Living; and extended family members who will lovingly remember her.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Dora and Melvin Gray; husband Roy Johnson; in-laws Rudolph and Aina Johnson; son-in-law Chris; brother Richard Gray; sister Annice Cappeart; loving brother- and sister-in-laws; and two special nephews. Their memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew Phyllis.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Manistique on Friday, June 19. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., followed by Mass at 11 a.m., officiated by Father Ben Paris. Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery after the service.
Memorial donations may be made in Phyllis’s honor to the Trillium House of Marquette or the Manistique School Public Library. The family would like to thank the staff at Brookridge Assisted Living, Trillium House and Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice for their excellent care of our mom. The Fausett Family Funeral Homes are assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
Phyllis will be remembered for her compassion, warmth, and unwavering devotion to her family and community. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and treasured memories. May she rest in peace.
