IRON MOUNTAIN — Susan C. Veale, 81, of Iron Mountain, died Monday, June 1, 2026, at home surrounded by her family.

She was born May 28, 1945, in Detroit, to the late Wesley Roberts and Myrtle (Johnson) Dompierre and lovingly raised by her parents, Francis and Myrtle Dompierre. Sue graduated from Negaunee High School in 1963 and went on to obtain her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education from Northern Michigan University.

Sue married Dennis Veale on Dec. 17, 1966, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Negaunee. She was an elementary school teacher for the Iron Mountain Public School System for 26 years, retiring in 2005. Sue taught every elementary grade with the exception of fifth grade. She also served as the teacher’s union president for several years. She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain, where she was very active.

She served in the altar guild, as the choir accompanist, played the organ and in the bell choir, taught Sunday School and was involved in Bible Study and Lydia Circle groups. She was also a member of P.E.O. Sue enjoyed music, gardening, and spent many hours reading, especially her Bible. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

Sue is survived by her loving husband, Dennis; her sons, Todd (Marci) Veale of Iron Mountain, Kevin Veale of Portland, Michigan, and Michael (Shanna) Veale of Cleveland, Tennessee; eight grandchildren, Garrett, Audrey and Tanner Veale, Jacob and Sadie Veale, Kailyn, Gannon and Jaxon Veale. She is further survived by her siblings, Paul (Julie) Dompierre of Negaunee, Cathy (Larry) Young of Gladstone; sisters-in-law Cis Dompierre and Becky Veale; brother-in-law John Jarrett; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Francis Dompierre, Jr.; brother-in-law Gary Veale; and sister-in-law Connie Jarrett.

Visitation will take place from 9 until 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 1210 S. Kimberly Ave. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Dr. Nicholas Hopman officiating. Burial will take place in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park.
