IRON MOUNTAIN — Francis Edward “Frank” Nichols, 71, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026, in Iron Mountain.
Born on Dec. 14, 1954, in Iron Mountain, Frank lived a life defined by hard work, strong values, lasting friendships, and a deep love for his family. He was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose kindness, wisdom, and quiet strength touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Frank proudly served his country in the United States Army as a member of the prestigious 101st Airborne Division. His time in the military instilled in him a lifelong sense of duty, discipline, resilience, and honor. He carried those values with him throughout his life, earning the respect of everyone who knew him. Though he rarely sought recognition for his service, he remained deeply proud of having served his country.
Frank is survived by his ex-wife, Susan (McLain) Turner; his children, David, Benjamin, and Leigh Ann; his grandchildren, Jordan, Nikko, and Elijah; and his sisters, Mary Lane VandenHeuvel, Betty Gaul, and Margaret Harrison.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Josephine (Suszka) Nichols; and his sister, Patricia (Biller) Lundin.

Throughout his life, Frank worked as an independent logger, earning the respect of those around him for his environmental stewardship, operational expertise, and unwavering work ethic. He took great pride in caring for the land while making an honest living. Outside of work, he found joy in fishing, golfing, bird-watching, and riding his Harley. Those who knew Frank will remember his warm smile, infectious sense of humor, generous spirit, and the steadfast friendship he offered to everyone he met.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at Fence Union Church. Military honors will follow at Fence Cemetery, with food, fellowship, and the sharing of memories afterward at the Fence Town Hall.
Frank will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. His legacy of love, integrity, hard work, compassion, and friendship will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
