ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Edmund "Ed" Willis, 94, of Alexandria, Va., died peacefully on Sept. 1, 2026, at The Fairfax, Fort Belvoir, Va.
He was born in Norway on March 28, 1932, son of the late Philip and Pearle (Chenoweth) Willis. Ed was a 1950 graduate of Pembine High School.
He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin, where he earned his Ph.D. In 1955, Ed proudly entered the United States Navy and served his country honorably, ultimately attaining the rank of captain.
Following his active military service in 1958, Ed enrolled in graduate studies in history at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1962, he returned to inactive military duty while continuing his education and pursuing his doctorate in history at U.C. Berkeley. Ed was also an avid world traveler, visiting many countries throughout his lifetime, including Portugal, China, and Japan. Of all the places he traveled, Ireland held a special place in his heart and remained his favorite destination.
Ed is survived by his two daughters, Laura Winans and Linda Willis; as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 17, at Roubal Funeral Home in Wausaukee, Wis., from 10 a.m. until the time of his funeral service at 11 a.m. Pastor Ken Sann is officiating. Burial will be in the Pembine Cemetery with full military honors.
