CRYSTAL FALLS -- It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gail Marie Dalpra, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend who departed this world on Aug. 18, 2026, at Aspirus Iron River Hospital, surrounded by her family.
Born on Sept. 13, 1941, in Iron Mountain to the late Roy and Evelyn (Raben) Friestrom, Gail spent her formative years in Crystal Falls and graduated from Crystal Falls High School in 1959.
In 1965, she married Robert "Bob" Dalpra, and they made their home in Crystal Falls. Together, they spent many happy years raising their two children, while also opening their hearts and home as foster parents to several young and troubled youths over the years. Her warmth and generosity made her home a place of comfort and love for all who entered. She and Bob also enjoyed the experience of hosting a foreign exchange student, with whom they developed a lasting relationship that endures to this day.
For 25 years, Gail dedicated herself to employment with the County of Iron Conservation District. It was there where her passion for the environment flourished, and as such she actively supported tree sales and early recycling programs in the county. Her career moved upward and to the south when she moved to Charlevoix, Mich. There, she was employed with the Department of Health and Human Services in Charlevoix and Emmet County. After 13 years there, she retired and eventually moved back to Crystal Falls.
Throughout her life she had a deep sense of community involvement and this led her to many volunteer opportunities within the county and her involvement on the Crystal Falls Centennial Committee, where she was an editor for the commemorative historical publication, "A Collection of Recollections."
She was a very talented pianist and vocalist, and was known throughout the area from playing at various venues. She was especially proud to have played at Woodstock, Ill. at a friend's wedding. She had a band with her brother Gary, which was always well received by their audiences. In the early '90s, she compiled and produced a tape of some of her favorite love songs, titled "Intimate Moments." Her love of music was passed down to those close to her.
"Poods" had lots of friends who appreciated her quick wit and sense of humor. She appreciated a good pun whenever an opportunity presented itself. She was an avid card player, especially enjoying poker games with family and friends.
Gail will be remembered for her ability to get along with everyone, her infectious laughter, and her unwavering love for her family -- especially her grandchildren, who were her pride and joy. She welcomed everyone with open arms, always ready to listen and share in heartfelt conversations. She was known as "favorite aunty" by more than one of her nieces and nephews, and she loved all like her own.
Gail was preceded in death by her son, Timothy Erick; her former husband, Robert B. Dalpra; her son-in-law, Michael Hand; brother-in-law Ray Palmer; and foster granddaughter Nicole Maenpaa.
She is survived by her son, Robert (Mary) Dalpra; her daughter, Jennifer Hand; her brother, Gary Friestrom; her sister, Betty Palmer; and her four grandchildren, Connor Dalpra, Christopher Dalpra, Caden Hand and Jason Hand. She is also survived by a foster son, Larry Maenpaa, and his daughter, Samantha; a foreign exchange son, Victor Nilo; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, at United Lutheran Church in Crystal Falls, with visitation from 9 to 11 p.m. and a memorial service at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery at a later date to be determined.
