Larry Schiavo

CRYSTAL FALLS TOWNSHIP -- Larry Schiavo, 86, of the Amasa area, passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 31, 2026.

He was born on Dec. 3, 1939, in Crystal Falls, son of the late John and Katherine (Rondon) Schiavo. He married Susan Ketola on July 21, 1962, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Amasa and spent nearly 56 wonderful years together before her passing in 2018. A lifelong resident of the area, Larry was a forester with American Can and later for Ned Lake before retiring in 2000.

He was a faithful member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Amasa and a member of the Net River Association. An avid outdoorsman, Larry enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time at his camp. He also enjoyed baseball, bowling, cooking and playing cards, especially smear and cribbage. Most of all, he loved time spent with family and friends.

Larry is survived by his children, Tim Schiavo of Westminster, Calif., Tony (Carol) Schiavo of Sterling, Mich., and Lisa (Rich) Santi of Crystal Falls; five grandchildren, Maria, Nick, and Sam Schiavo and Toni and Paul Santi; his sister, Rita Leanna of Crystal Falls; in-laws Geri Ketola of Crystal Falls, Jim (Betty) Ketola of Amasa, Jerry (Elaine) Ketola of Little Suamico, Wis., Linda Besiak of Amasa, and Phil (Peggy) Ketola of Crystal Falls; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Along with his parents and wife, Susan, he was preceded in death by his father and mother in-law, Eino and Lula Ketola; a brother, Donald Schiavo; sister Rosemary Froblom; brothers-in-law Robert "Bub" Ketola, Dave Ketola, Robert Leanna, Barry Besiak, David Sandri and Charlie Froblom; and sister-in-laws Linda Schiavo and Bonnie Ketola.

The visitation will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Amasa, followed by a memorial service at noon at the church. Pastor D.J. Rasner will officiate. Burial will be in the Amasa Cemetery.
