QUINNESEC -- Donald Alan Sommerfeld, 83, of Quinnesec, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026, at Optalis Health & Rehabilitation of Kingsford.
He was born Dec. 8, 1942, in Indiana, the son of Walter and Anna Sommerfeld. Don married Donna Bickel on Dec. 7, 1963, in Lansing, Ill. They moved with their three children to Quinnesec in 1976.
Don had a talent for working with his hands and spent his career at various companies before retiring from Z&R Electric in 2013. He could repair nearly anything and often fabricated parts to improve or modify equipment.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who especially enjoyed camping with Donna and his grandsons. One of his greatest joys was pulling the boys behind his lawn mower in carts he built himself.
Don also loved spending time in his yard, tending flowers and plants and sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with others. He had an excellent memory and family and friends could always count on hearing detailed accounts of his many adventures.
He is survived by his three children, Doug (Kristin) Sommerfeld of Quinnesec, Melissa Scott (Tony Picucci) of Spread Eagle, Wis., and Mike Sommerfeld (Andrea Collins) of Kingsford; sisters Sharon (Jim) Hubbard and Carol (Bruce) Barton of Indiana; grandsons David Anderson (Lonie LePage), Alex Scott (Jessica Nelson), Eric Sommerfeld, and Joel Sommerfeld; great-grandson Braylon Anderson; brothers-in-law Jeff Bickel and Jan (Tobin) Bickel; sister-in-law Dawn (Larry) Graham; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, in 2023; and a sister-in-law, Judy Bickel.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
