The consequences of ignoring the warning signals

Wednesday, my wife and I were watching the show “Morning Joe” on MSNBC.

Joe and team were attacking the governor of Virginia for the mess that had occurred on an Interstate highway in Virginia.

It seems a lot of folks were trapped in their vehicles, unable to proceed to their destination due to some really bad winter weather. It had rained, making it impossible to put a salt and water mixture on the road ahead of the storm, as the rain would just wash it off. Then, it snowed and it snowed a lot and the snow was the heavy, wet variety.

Living here, we pretty much all know just what that is like. In any case, the conditions were such that forward movement was impossible and so traffic stopped for over 24 hours. People were forced to sit in their cars and wait with no water, food or restroom facilities available.

Joe and crew were in full wah-wah mode for those “poor” people who had to endure such conditions.

But wait — before this disaster happened, the weather forecasters warned people to stay off that road because this was going to happen. The highway commissions warned people to stay off that road because this was going to happen. But the people went anyway. They were of course feeling entitled or maybe just lucky. They thought they would be the outlier who would be able to make it in spite of Mother Nature and the warnings of science and, yes, even common sense.

Maybe, as so many do these days, they put their faith in good old front wheel drive. Who knows and really, who cares? If the vehicles in front of you do not move then you will not move. It is as simple as that.

But somewhere along the way, a good share of Americans have come to the point of such entitlement that they are feel they are above the forces of nature and above the knowledge of science. I don’t know when this happened to so many people but I do find it hard to feel sorry for them. There are a good many things you might be entitled to. Overriding the forces of nature and common sense do not seem to be among them.

Maybe I will write about the morons trapped in airports over the holidays at a future time. But maybe not. It is pretty much the same deal as above.

Perhaps a good many folks should ask Santa for some common sense next year.
