Need to address US mental illness

I still love to hear Anne Murray sing “A Little Good News” but sadly, good news stories are far and few between. In my wildest dreams, I never would have imagined such hate, violence and plain evil that has taken over our country. I used to long for “simpler days”; now I’m praying for “peace-filled days.”

I can’t watch the news, read the newspaper or turn on the radio without non-stop coverage of mass murders in schools and churches, people literally thrown off platforms into oncoming subways. Just last night I watched a young man purposely veer his car into the path of a mother pushing her son in a stroller (on the sidewalk). The driver got five to seven months in a juvenile camp. The woman and her young son were miraculously alive. What in God’s name is going on? Did we blame the car or the subway for those awful incidents? Of course not. They were the result of mentally ill people. It appears that only when death or injury is at the hands of a gunman do we blame the gun.

We need to get our heads out of the sand and stand up to our governmental leaders (on both sides of the aisle) and demand something be done to treat and curb mental illness. This doesn’t just encompass those who wish to do harm to others but the majority who take their own lives. We’re living in such dark times that hope for a brighter tomorrow is appears to be nonexistent.

Our young people are bearing the brunt of this nightmare. They were forced into a virtual learning environment with no social interaction. There is a fentanyl epidemic that continues to grow as a means of dealing with the uncertainty of their young lives. Video games have become so prominent, you never see a child playing outside, a teenager fishing or an adult volunteering as a Boy Scout or Girl Scout leader. Our children are left on their own without much supervision.

Our laws have become so lax that a person can do just about any unthinkable deed and get off scott-free. Legalizing recreational marijuana, governmental cradle-to-grave assistance, reparations for actions of past generations are just a few harebrained progressive ideas that have led (in my opinion) to many not wanting to work or take responsibility for their actions.

We are on the road to destruction and we’re careening out of control. This path is a dead end unless we put on the brakes. It’s ironic that we pray for those who were murdered in school shootings, yet God is not allowed in our public schools. Unless we yield to God, I believe there is no hope for our country or humanity.
