Doesn’t see need to ‘jazz up’ the National Anthem
At the end of May, after over a month of appointments at the VA Hospital in Milwaukee, my son, who pushed me around by wheelchair in that huge building, and I decided to attend the “Memorial Day” program.
What we witnessed was a “big city” program at the Wood National Cemetery on the VA property.
Not too far away, we could see the stadium of the Milwaukee baseball team.
The program, which is an annual observance, was titled “Remember and Honor.”
There was a master of ceremonies, the Milwaukee American Legion Band, a chaplain, a Wisconsin senator, a retired major general, a member of every branch of the service in full uniform and much, much more.
The Honor Guard rifle valley fired a 21-gun salute.
A black balloon was released with the name of a Wisconsin veteran who was missing in action or a prisoner of war.
What was really a standout part of this was the singing of our National Anthem towards the beginning of the program and the singing of “God Bless America” towards the end.
It was a deep, rich woman’s voice that created a lot of misty eyes, including my own.
She must have been an opera singer.
At televised ball games now — football, basketball, baseball, etc. — they have a “trumped up” version of the singing of our National Anthem. Every time, they jazz it up more. There’s no one who believes more than me, that everything is subject to change. Doing what they are doing to our National Anthem is a “no-no.”
I love my country too much to say nothing.
