Misinformation on Proposal 3

There has been much confusion and misinformation on Proposal 3, Reproduction Freedom for All. I hope to clear up some of the misinformation.

— Myth 1: Woman can get an abortion right up to the point of birth. The state cannot take away the right to an abortion pre-viability; however, they can take away the right after fetal viability. No different than what was set 50 years ago with Roe Vs. Wade. Once the fetus can survive outside the womb without extraordinary measures an abortion cannot take place unless the life of the mother is in jeopardy. A “yes” vote will protect that right. Only doctors can make that judgement. The fear of women aborting a perfectly formed viable fetus just because is one of those horrible lies that continue to circulate but hold no truth, except to shame women.

— Myth 2: Will undo the health and safety standards that we have in MIichiganto protect patients. The standards for the health and safety of patients will not change. The state requires doctors to protect the health of the patient as long as those regulations are consistent with the standard of care. This will not change with a “yes” vote.

— Myth 3: Parents of minors will not have to be notified if their minor child is seeking an abortion or gender-changing drugs. The current state law requires minors to obtain consent from parents or guardians, unless waived by a judge, before undergoing an abortion procedure. There is nothing in the proposition that will allow a minor to receive gender-changing drugs. A “yes” vote cannot change the law. In order for the law to change, there would have to be a change from the legislation body.

— Myth 4: Will allow masseuses and acupuncturists to perform abortions. Only board-certified doctors can perform a legal abortion.

Proposal 3 will allow women in Michigan to continue to have safe and legal abortions, as they have had for the past 50 years. Failure to pass this proposition will put women and children in danger. Trust women and their doctors to make the right decision for themselves, their current children and their future children. Realize that the number one reason women seek an abortion is economics. Forcing a person to give birth against their will is cruel, inhumane, can result in death and treats women like livestock. Trust women to decide their own fate, and vote “yes” on Proposal 3.
