Letters on Tuesday’s elections

EDITOR’S NOTE: Wednesday was the deadline for receiving election-related letters, with today the final day for printing.

Vote ‘no’ on Proposal 2

EDITOR:

Joseph Stalin wrote, “Those who vote decide nothing. Those who count the vote decide everything.” Scary words.

I have to show an ID when I fly, cash a check, take out a loan, open a bank account, apply for school or a marriage license — the list goes on and on. So I’m dumbfounded by the idea that requiring voter ID is racist, unfair and will suppress votes. Isn’t voting just as (or more) important than these? If I have to prove it’s me to do these things, shouldn’t I also have to when deciding the future of my country?

Texas, Arizona and Georgia have adopted voter ID requirements, including absentee ballots. Yet the Texas primary has had 500,000 more voters in 2022 than 2018 and Arizona’s primary had a record turnout of 1.4 million ballots. Doesn’t look like votes were suppressed.

Mailing out unsolicited ballots is ripe for fraud, as states aren’t good at maintaining voter rolls. In 2019, 41 states showed 349,773 deceased registrants on voter rolls, the worst being Michigan, Florida, New York, Texas and California. Yet Dana Nessel is fighting to keep inactive voters from being purged. Why?

Every American should be concerned that elections are fair. Vote “no” on Proposal 2.

Backing Hill in 109th District

EDITOR:

A week ago, I got the opportunity to meet Jenn Hill, the Democratic candidate for the 109th District state House seat, and gained an understanding of her passion for the Upper Peninsula and its people. Jenn became a “Yooper” by choice. Growing up in the Midwest, her family traveled each year to the U.P. for one of their passions: fishing.

Her experience as a Marquette City Commissioner and nonprofit leader makes her able to tackle the issues that “Yoopers” are most concerned about: environment, public health, affordable housing, lowering energy costs and repealing the retirement tax, putting $1,000 per year back into the pockets of seniors. Jenn Hill believes every woman should have the right to her own reproductive health care without government interference.

It’s time we had a leader like Jenn Hill in the U.P.

Before voting, get 2nd opinion

EDITOR:

A contractor is to build your house. How many bids would you get? Your doctor says your favorite body part has to be amputated now! Would you get a second opinion? Of course. What if your doctor said s/he alone knew what was right, and every other doctor everywhere else was wrong? Would you believe that? Would you let the fox watch your hen house? Of course not.

Similarly, seek a second opinion before voting by Nov. 8.

This election is important. Consider finding other information sources to double-check yours.

Even if you hate this president, the Democrats are improving life for you. For our country, the Infrastructure and Jobs Act will spend billions on bridge repair and replacement, clean drinking water (108th District state House candidate David Prestin will not say he opposes the proposed Back Forty mine here), access to high-speed Internet, U.S. Department of Agriculture programs, energy transmission and power infrastructure upgrades. You could get a good job out of this, so we all will benefit from it.

Medicare/Medicaid will start negotiating the prices of drugs and cap out-of-pocket spending. It caps monthly costs of life-and-limb-saving insulin (talk about amputations) to $35 a month. If you’ve worked, you paid into Social Security and Medicare. So they are not “entitlement programs.” The Republicans, including Ron Johnson, announced plans to take them away from us.

All present Democratic senators voted yes on care benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits. Forty-one Republicans voted against it (just to prevent a Democratic win, until pressured by veterans to change their votes). Know any veterans?

You can look up these bills and voting records on https://ballotpedia.org .

There has been NO proof of widespread voter fraud. More than 60 courts found no fraud. NOBODY has shown any valid proof of results-changing fraud. Why do so many believe there was? Just because talking heads say something does not mean it is true. Do you just believe what you’ve been told on media (owned by billionaires that benefit from your outrage)? You owe it to yourself, your family, community and country to find out more from different sources.

What do you believe about the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol? If you have not seen any of those hearings, you have not seen the whole story. Watch this before you vote: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZMaukGL2Bo. (Fast forward video until speakers start.)

Your knowledge and opinion of Jan. 6 will be changed by watching it. To vote before watching this would be the same as amputating your favorite body part without a second opinion. It IS that critically important.
