Looking back on the election

Not everyone who voted in last week’s election had the outcome they had hoped for. That is the way it goes.

However, all Dickinson Country residents who did turn out to vote — either in person or by absentee ballot — should be assured that their vote was counted, recounted and certified as it was written. We should all be grateful to County Clerk Carol Bronzyk, her staff, the poll workers in every precinct, and the Dickinson County Canvass Board for their efforts in making our democracy work for all of us.

The media hyped up this midterm as the most important vote of all times and in may ways it was. However, in the end, I hope we have learned that democracy only works when we all believe in one basic tenant: voting is our right and should be held to the highest standards to maintain its integrity, no matter the party, one’s ethnicity or the beliefs held by the individual voter.

One thing we must be vigilant about in the future and demand from everyone is to campaign with truth and facts, not lies, misinformation or hearsay. Instead of slinging mud at their opponents, tell us what you will do differently.

At the time of this writing, some states have not completed their count and we all wait for the outcome as to which party will rule the U.S. House. Let us all hope that whichever way that falls, the party in control of both the House and the Senate will remember they are working for us, whether we voted for them or not. They should be beholding to us their constitutes, and not those who lobby for their individual causes.

If we see that they have forgotten who sent them, let us not hesitate to remind them we sent them to do a job for all Americans and in two years we can fire them if they are not performing as they should.
