Medicine waste in America
Here I go again, voicing my frustrations! I have recently gone to my pharmacy to pick up a prescription refill. I was handed not only the one I went for, but another bag. I stood right in front of the counter to open the bag to see what was in it, only to realize it was one I no longer use. I did not open the bottle so said to the associate, “Oh, I don’t even use this anymore.” I tried to hand it back to him and he put his hand up, meaning we cannot take it back.
I can accept that but it got me thinking. Here we are in America — one of the richest countries in the world, if not THE richest — and we just throw away perfectly good medicine! People in some countries cannot even afford aspirin.
I came home, and went into my “file” of unused medications. I dumped them all into a bag, threw out the bottles and hauled them up to the Michigan State Police post to dispose of them, as I did not want them in my home any longer.
C’mon America. Let’s figure out a way to stop the waste and instead help poor countries with all of our unused medicine.
