Renewal, not new: Bay Yes! launches campaign for millage
Guest column
The Bay Yes! Committee is urging Dickinson County residents to vote YES on the renewal of the Bay College Iron Mountain Campus millage during the upcoming election Tuesday, Aug. 5.
This is not a new tax, but a renewal of the existing millage that has supported local higher education since 2005.
Why vote yes?
— It’s a renewal, not a new tax: The 0.9887 mill property tax has been in place for 20 years and is set to expire with the 2026 tax levy. This renewal would extend the millage through 2046.
— Proven impact: Since 1977, the Iron Mountain campus has served 8,319 students, employed 720 individuals, celebrated 1,879 graduates and supported 1,727 dual-enrolled students.
— 81% of current students are residents of Dickinson County.
— The millage has saved Bay College more than $1.8 million in operational costs over the past 18 years.
What does the millage support?
The millage ensures Bay College can continue to operate and grow its Iron Mountain Campus, providing:
— Accessible, affordable education;
— Training for in-demand local careers;
— Dual enrollment opportunities for high school students; and
— A steady pipeline of skilled workers to strengthen the local economy.
“Our vision for Bay de Noc College Iron Mountain Campus is to be a vibrant hub of innovation, sustainability and community partnership,” said Julie Olsen, Bay Yes! Committee vice chair. “We are committed to creating state-of-the-art learning environments that prepare students for the demands of today’s workforce while promoting inclusivity, respect, and collaboration. By investing in education, we empower individuals, strengthen our local economy, and ensure a brighter future for generations to come.”
