Living under ‘might makes right’ rule

Letter to the Editor

“Might makes right.” You may have heard this over the past couple of weeks. It has been is used by our government to take over Venezuela. It is used by Russia to invade Ukraine. It is use by the Orthodox Israelis to justify the taking of Palestinian lands. When will our president use it next, Greenland?

In the past week I have heard it used for the shooting of a citizen in Minnesota by a federal agent — Might makes right.

If might makes right, where does it stop? Does it stop at the state police or county sheriff levels? What about your neighbor? If he does something you do not like, does might makes right allow you to thump him?

What about your teenage son or daughter — if either pops off at a teacher, is it OK for the teacher to give whichever a wallop? Of course, there is the case if the spouse does not have dinner on the table at the right time, can you give her a smack? Might makes right allows this to happen.

Do we want to be a civilization of laws/rules: family, county, state, federal and international? Or do we want to live in a place where might makes right? That is to say, where the strongest or wealthiest make the rules and take what they want, when they want.

Starting at $3.50/week.
