Is a great country based on power or the substance of its character and influence in the world?
It is often said by politician and others that this country is the greatest in the world largely based on its wealth and power and a myth of opportunity for all. Many countries in the past and present have been wealthy and powerful but lack character due to oppression, brutality of minorities and religious acceptance of that within the country.
Our country's history puts us in that category. In my opinion, a country can become great but has to accept its past brutality, arrogance, sexism/racism. The character that I feel is important is to have the courage as a people and an individual to stand up for every individual's right to respect, justice, and fair opportunity.
That in reality is not true in this country at this time. There are lots of excuses or denials from church goers and others. That was the case during slavery, the Civil Rights Period, the effort to erase Native American cultures, and the classification of as lease equal under the law women, Native Americans, and other minority groups.
To be a great country, we have to address present-day racism and sexism, brutality in the interaction and confinement of minority citizens and noncitizens, racial fairness, and white nationalism. History tells us that it can be done through courage, a willingness to sacrifice, and persistence. I believe it is possible.
