Who’s the best? You get to decide

From Where I Sit

It's that time of year again -- the time when we ask the public a very important question: Who do you think is the best?

Our annual People's Choice contest is one of my favorite things we do at The Daily News because in this contest you--the public--have the final say.

Every year, our community comes together to nominate and vote for the local businesses, organizations, people and places they believe deserve to be recognized. It's a celebration of the people and businesses that make our area unique, and I love seeing the community get behind their favorites.

The process starts with nominations, and there are hundreds of categories to choose from. Best steak. Best hair stylist. Best automotive shop. Best place for a cup of coffee -- and so many more. We've also added new categories this year that reflect our evolving community.

Once nominations are tallied, the finalists will be published in our People's Choice tabloid, and then the voting begins.

We've also made some updates to this year's contest, including a simplified voting process and enhanced security measures designed to make voting easier and ensure a fair opportunity for every nominee.

But before we get to the voting, we need your nominations.

Nominations open Wednesday and close Sept. 15, so start thinking about your favorites now. Who provides the service you can always count on? What local business would you recommend to a friend? Who deserves to be recognized by the community?

One of my favorite parts of People's Choice comes afterward. I love seeing the certificates we print proudly displayed in local businesses -- sometimes year after year -- showing customers what their community has recognized them for.

Those certificates represent more than winning a contest. They represent the votes of local customers, friends and neighbors who took the time to say, "This is who I think is the best."

And that's what makes this contest so much fun.

It's not The Daily News telling you who is the best. It's our community deciding together.

Think about your favorites, and when nominations open, make sure your voice is heard.
