Carpenter billboard false, misleading

Letter to the Editor

By William D. Rice, Kingsford 2 min read

There is a huge, misleading billboard on Carpenter Avenue that is intentionally deceptive.

Members of the Republican Party want you to think that Democrats and their party's candidates want to change the United States to a socialist country. That could not be further from the truth. Numerous dictionary sources -- Merriam-Webster, a gold standard -- and political and history textbooks explain the difference between Socialism and social programs.

Socialism is an economic system. In this system, governments or a collective group of citizens control the economy. We do not have a socialistic government and economic system. China, Cuba, Vietnam, and North Korea are examples of socialistic governments. There are others countries such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland that are Social Democracies. They are capitalistic, similar to our country in economics, but they offer more social programs such as healthcare to all citizens. The United States is a capitalistic economy. However, within that economy, we have social programs.

Our social programs include, but are not limited to, public schools, roads, police and fire departments, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food assistance like SNAP and other such programs.

These programs are paid for through public tax revenues. They are managed by local governments, state governments, and federal governments. This is NOT Socialism!

Democrats believe in capitalism with social programs to protect the wellbeing and health of the county's citizens. Demonstrating limited knowledge of American governmental organization and principles is not positive or helpful advocacy before an election.
