As election day approaches, Breitung Township Schools voters have an opportunity to support our students, schools, and community by voting YES on the sinking fund renewal.
-- Promises made, promises kept: Since the original millage passed in 2017, BTS leadership has followed through on its commitments to taxpayers, helping ensure our school facilities remain safe, secure and up to date. -- No tax increase: It is important for voters to understand that this is a renewal, not a tax increase. In fact, the proposed renewal rate is lower than the rate approved in 2017, meaning the millage rate will decrease.
-- Maximum value for taxpayers: BTS maintains one of the lowest combined debt retirement and sinking fund millage rates in the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District compared with other districts. Our schools are working to make every taxpayer dollar count while providing students with a quality education and maintaining responsible costs for local homeowners.
-- Accountability and transparency: State law strictly limits how sinking fund revenues may be spent. These funds can only be used for eligible facility, security and technology improvements permitted by law and specified in the ballot language. They cannot be used for staff compensation or administrative salaries, and expenditures are subject to annual state audits.
Renewing the sinking fund is a fiscally responsible way to maintain our school facilities, strengthen school security, and keep classrooms equipped with modern technology -- all while lowering the millage rate.
Our schools are an important investment in our students and the future of our community. I encourage voters to support this renewal and help ensure our facilities continue to serve students, families, and taxpayers well into the future.
