We should learn from history

Letter to the Editor

I read with interest the quote from "AOC" (U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.), made during a visit this month in Iron Mountain. "It's not the left and the right that divides us. It's the top versus the bottom."

Really? The mentality behind that view is "You have more than I do. I deserve to have what you have, and the government should give it to me." So now not only are we to be divided racially, but we are also to consider fellow citizens to be our enemies. How does this position bring any unity to our country.

I recently re-watched the classic film "Dr. Zhivago," set during the Russian revolution. Similar ideas were used to foment upheaval. Power to the people! How did it end? The citizens became slaves of the state.

Yes, there are some at the "top" who have cheated their way there. For the most part those at the "top" have provided us with goods and services that we valued above the dollars we spent to obtain them: iPhones, internet, vehicles that do everything, etc.

All political parties have their "top" members. True Democrats need to reassert the party's ideological base -- the party of JFK, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan (who later stated, "I didn't leave the party, the party left me.") Would that we had those men in leadership today.

Starting at /week.
