When labels get corrupted

Letter to the Editor

Do political or even religious labels of a person mean much? I believe they only really suggest a vague support of a generally abstract set of values or beliefs.

Persons of a specific group will often accommodate actions that are criminal, immoral and dangerous to outside persons and groups. For example, people will often ignore, excuse, blame people outside their group or belief system for criminal, immoral or physically harmful acts that are done by persons in their group. The ICE officers' behavior to Hispanics that many Republicans and some Christians condone by their silence or rationalization are examples. That means one can not make any significant judgement without knowing the real actions and inactions of the person or groups that can be verified by a neutral source.

It seems to me our country's greatness has become measured by the number of billionaires, the countries we can threaten, and the monuments we can build. The number of minorities we reject or abused is irrelevant. Our beliefs of control over all others also seem irrelevant. Putting ourselves above others seem to be the standard since that is the opposite of the meaning of woke.

I think when labels get corrupted, as I think they are today, political and religious labels lose meaning. It also seems to me the country loses any moral greatness it had. To be truly great, we must respect the life, liberty and dignity of all people, citizens and noncitizens alike, without labels.
