Daily News earns statewide awards

Both the print and online editions of The Daily News were recognized in statewide contests conducted recently by the Michigan Press Association and the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors.

The newspaper received 17 awards overall.

In the MPA contest, The Daily News earned second place for Best Digital Presentation in Class C for daily newspapers with a circulation of 5,001 to 11,000. In the Michigan APME contest, The Daily News received third place for Best Digital Presence in Division 1, which had 25 newspapers in the field.

Also in the Michigan APME contest, the newspaper won staff awards for Best Headline Writing, second place; and Best Spot News Coverage, third place, for “Two seriously injured in rural Niagara explosion.”

Individual winners in the Michigan APME contest were:

— Terri Castelaz, second place, Best Public Service, for “Fighting against FTD: Family details 20-year battle against early form of dementia,” and third place, Best Business Writing.

— Jerry DeRoche, second place, Best Feature Writing.

— Dennis Mansfield, second place, Best Sports Column for “From the Mound”; and third place, Best Sports Photo for “Up, up and away!”

— Betsy Bloom and Jim Anderson, first place, Best Editorial Writing.

In the MPA contest, The Daily News captured a staff award, second place, for Best Newspaper Design.

Individual winners in the MPA contest were:

— Jim Anderson, second place, Best Editorial, for “The freedom to read.”

— Dennis Mansfield, third place, Best Page or Pages Design, for “Sports Today”; and honorable mention, Photo Story, for “Twin titles for Knights!”

— Marguerite Lanthier, third place, Feature Photo, for “Freezing rain expected in area.”

— Betsy Bloom, third place, Feature Story, for “Only eight lives left?”

— Jerry DeRoche, honorable mention, Government/Education News, for “The next step: Florence Unified Field Day brings new interactions for students.”

The Michigan APME contest covered the calendar year 2022. The MPA contest extended from Aug. 1, 2021, through July 31, 2022.
