For safety’s sake, slow down in Norway, please

Bouquets and Barbs

Barb: As I write this, the Labor Day weekend and summer is coming to a close. However there is one thing that is not coming to a close but just slowing down. I am referring to the constant speeding on Highway 8/Brown Street in Norway.

All summer long “soccer moms,” truckers and other vehicles are always speeding both into town and out of town. The city of Norway refuses to do anything to try to control this out of control speeding situation. This is a posted 25 mph zone to just south of Danielson’s Greenhouse where the speed limit changes to 55 mph.

Why is this the only major road coming into town where the speed limit is not gradually reduced? Common sense tells you that it is impossible to drop vehicle speed 30 mph, especially for semi-trucks.

With all the activity in the area of Marion Park and people turning in and out of the park it seems that a 55 mph speed limit there is unsafe. I can’t tell you how many accidents happen there but they always increase during fair week. Just last weekend, on Saturday night an accident happened resulting in the injury of three people.

Is there no longer a concern for the safety of human life on this road? The numerous injuries over the years are a price many have paid.

I shudder to think of the possibility of a fatal accident there but is that what it will take for something to be done about the speed limit and steps to control speeders through this area?

Starting at $3.50/week.
