We need to be kinder in this divisive time
Bouquets and Barbs
Barb: My husband and I volunteered to work the County Democratic Party’s booth at the Dickinson County Fair on Aug. 31. It was a beautiful day and for those four hours it was a great experience.
Unfortunately, not every shift went so smoothly. The previous evening was marred by some loud, rude and intimidating young men who were not yet of voting age. They paraded in front of the booth in their MAGA gear, shouting Trump’s name, being aggressive and refusing to leave when asked. Later, a man took a photo of the sign-up sheet at our counter with the names and addresses of those people who wanted yard signs. He then proceeded to the Republican booth, where he shared their names.
On Saturday morning, the workers were harassed again by a man and woman who hurled loud, obscene insults and when asked to leave grew more angry and more abusive. When a female worker came around the table to ask them once again to leave, she was met with an in-her-face, nastily worded personal attack. At that time, 911 was called and a sheriff’s deputy and a Michigan State Police trooper arrived. The couple was still yelling and being aggressive as they were led away.
In these days of division, we all must realize that there are more ideals that we agree with than divide us. We need to be kinder to each other.
