Breitung survey gives residents a chance to weigh in on projects

While getting the tax bill might not be fun, Breitung Township residents should look for something extra in the envelope — a survey about what they would like to see done for major municipal capital projects in coming years.

The township board is trying to sort out priorities before they begin committing funds. They had a roundtable meeting in February and a public forum last week to outline some of what’s been suggested and give residents a chance to weigh in.

Now comes the survey, which casts a wider net for input. It’s an opportunity residents should not miss to provide better guidance to local government on how they’d prefer their tax dollars were spent.

Some of the potential projects already raised are consolidating the East Kingsford and Quinnesec fire halls into a single site that would also include training facilities; building a Breitung Township community center that could be used for indoor sports, as an emergency shelter, for elections or rented out for events; drilling the township’s own wells in East Kingsford and bringing water lines as far as the Breitung Cutoff Road in Quinnesec; and parks improvements such as new playground equipment or adding tennis and basketball courts in the East Kingsford Recreation Area.

Township officials have already stated any of the proposed improvements would be done with existing funds at no additional cost to taxpayers. Your preferences, therefore, don’t have to be tinged by thoughts of what it might do to future tax bills.

So Breitung Township residents, take the time to fill out and send back that survey when it comes. Even if you attended the previous forums, this is another way to make your views clear and in writing.
