June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month

Most people we know aren’t adverse to reasonable gun control laws. There is nothing wrong with trying to keep innocent people safe while giving most people access to firearms.

It’s with that in mind that we underscore that June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about gun violence and its impact, and to promote gun safety and prevention. It’s also a time to honor victims and survivors of gun violence. The month is often marked by events and campaigns, such as “Wear Orange” to show support for ending gun violence.

Some points of emphasis during the month —

— Awareness: The primary goal is to educate the public about the prevalence and impact of gun violence.

—
Prevention: Emphasis is placed on safe firearm storage, responsible gun ownership and community-based solutions to reduce gun violence.

— Honoring victims and survivors: Events and campaigns aim to remember those affected by gun violence and support survivors.

— Wear orange: The color orange is a symbol of gun violence awareness, and many people wear it to show support for the cause.

— Community involvement: Local events, workshops and discussions take place to engage communities in finding solutions.

— Safe storage: Advocacy for safe firearm storage practices is a key component of the month’s message.

— Data: Gun violence is a significant public health issue, with firearm-related injuries being a leading cause of death among children and teens.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services chose this month to promote firearm injury prevention resources to help keep families safe. Its Firearm Injury Prevention webpage — https://www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/safety-injury-prev/firearm-injury-prevention — offers several different sources of information on such topics as firearm safety and harm prevention and required storage practices.

Be smart and wise at the same time — always put safety first when it comes to guns.
