Isle Royale moose hunt impractical

This is in response to Mr. Kesler’s “Hunt, not wolves, best answer for Isle Royale moose” letter in the April 26 Daily News.

I’m afraid you don’t understand the logistics of hunting on Isle Royale. You pose this as a choice between feeding wolves and feeding people. You could, of course, do both, but that’s beside the point. The island is accessible only by boat or plane. So either you own a very nice boat already, or need to pay for passage on one of the boats or planes that service the island.

Then, to get to the moose, you would need to be prepared to walk miles across very rugged terrain, carrying what you need to survive and hunt. The island isn’t open to ATVs. If it was, you would still have to get one there or rent one. Plus, you are talking even more damage to the island if people start off-roading on it.

Then you’d have to get the moose meat back out. It might be quite a hike, carrying a whole moose-worth of meat. Maybe you could do it on a sled? You would still have to keep it cold, though.

Now you have to get the meat off the island and back home. Refrigerated boat? It costs hundreds just to get passage there and back for a couple of people. How much would a refrigerated boat full of your meat cost?

Whether or not you want to allow hunting on the island, it would not be a cost-efficient way to “feed their families with moose meat.” Only well-off trophy hunters would be able to take the time off work and afford the expense. This means it wouldn’t be a good way to control the moose population, either. The number of people who would be willing to spend the money to hunt an animal you can hunt in more accessible areas just wouldn’t be there.

On top of that, one of the missions of the island is to maintain a place as close to being truly wild as possible. ATVs and trophy hunters would not help that mission.
