Why we need newspapers

EDITOR:

Good day to those who have bought this newspaper. I don’t know why you personally buy and read the newspaper, but I do encourage you to go a step further and encourage your friends and family to do the same. You might maybe pass along your copy for a short time while enticing them to buy their own subscription.

I moved to this area 17 years ago from the Green Bay area, so my wife and I also receive a limited subscription to the Green Bay newspaper. I eat a rather light breakfast, but I do linger over my coffee. Perfect time to read my papers. And as those of you who know me realize, I am not young and so I am “enjoying” some of the old people things. Like using a nebulizer for COPD. If you are my age, you know what I meant by the word enjoying. In any case, those of you who know me also know I am always looking for the silver lining in anything or any situation. In this case. while using the nebulizer I have a bit more time to read my newspapers. I actually read them. You know, all those stories that you are at first tempted to pass over. I have found that some dedicated people work very hard finding information and then presenting that information to me. I have also found that it is, for the most part, factual and informative and maybe even things I can use right away. In any case I can then think about what they presented and decide if it pertains to me or my life.

To me, newspapers are a part of America from the very beginning, and they still are. I have also found that newspapers in general are a whole lot more honest than several other forms of media, including television, radio and the internet. Now I am not talking about all of the media. But some of them are quite far out. Perhaps the editors of newspapers are more responsible in presenting the truth than the editorial staff of those alternate media forms. When they even have an editor.

Now that I have rattled on with this, let me end with one more thought. When you hear or see something on those alternates to the newspaper and you feel angered or inflamed, if you feel “someone” is taking something from you or if suddenly you realize you are a victim, question the source. Look for the truth. Seek and you will find. And a good place to start is the newspaper. Check the headline on page one. Does it say the same ridiculous thing you were just spoon fed by the talking head on TV, the voice on the radio or the headline on the internet page? I didn’t think so. Do you see why we need newspapers?
