Jake Paul
to fight Davis
ATLANTA (AP) — YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul and undefeated WBA world champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis have agreed to fight on Nov. 14 in Atlanta’s State Farm Arena.
Most Valuable Promotions and Netflix, which announced the planned fight on Wednesday, are billing it as a bout to determine the future face of boxing. Davis would be the first star boxer in his prime to face Paul, the online celebrity who has become one of the highest-paid combat sports athletes despite never fighting an elite opponent.
It’s unclear how this fight can be held competitively, because Paul typically weighs more than 200 pounds in the ring, while Davis is a 135-pound champion.
Lawmakers
quiz NCAA
WASHINGTON (AP) — Ten Democratic U.S. House members have asked the NCAA about its plans to protect female athletes’ interests.
They are concerned that most NIL and revenue-sharing payments go to male athletes. In a letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker, the lawmakers noted that Title IX guidance on NIL payments was rescinded during President Donald Trump’s administration.
They want answers to questions about equitable payment distribution and support for women’s sports. The NCAA did not directly address these questions but urged support for the “SCORE Act,” which aims to protect athletes’ rights. The NCAA says its investment in women’s sports has increased recently.
Woods to chair
PGA panel
ATLANTA (AP) — The first move by the PGA Tour’s new CEO is to put Tiger Woods in charge of a committee to study the competitive model.
Brian Rolapp held his first news conference since replacing Jay Monahan as the person in charge. Woods is chair of the nine-member “Future Competition Committee.” It will have a blank canvas to look at the model.
Rolapp says the idea is to uphold traditions without being bound by them. He says he wants what’s best to strengthen the tour. But when asked about LIV Golf, he felt the best players already are on the PGA Tour.
Sex testing
required
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The governing body for Olympic-style boxing will require sex testing for all fighters wishing to compete in the women’s division at its world championships next month. World Boxing already had announced its plan to require competitors to undergo a polymerase chain reaction test or an equivalent genetic screening test to determine their sex at birth. It announced Wednesday that the rules will be implemented ahead of the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, England, in early September. The tests identify the presence or absence of Y chromosome genetic material as the indicator of biological sex.
Thomas sparks
Phoenix Mercury
PHOENIX (AP) — Alyssa Thomas has been revving up the Phoenix Mercury. The player nicknamed The Engine has been the perfect fit for first-year coach Nate Tibbetts’ free-flowing offense, pushing the Mercury near the top of the WNBA standings even though they lost Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner.
Thomas earned her sixth WNBA All-Star nod in her first season in the desert and has become a top MVP candidate. Thomas leads the WNBA with 9.0 assists and is third with 8.6 rebounds per game while averaging 16.1 points.
She’s also racked up five triple-doubles.
