Alcaraz beats rival

Sinner at US Open

NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz has reasserted his superiority over Jannik Sinner with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory in the U.S. Open final.

Sunday’s showdown was the third Grand Slam tournament in a row where these elite, young rivals met to decide the champion. Alcaraz claimed his second trophy at Flushing Meadows and sixth overall at a major.

Sabalenka becomes

repeat champion

NEW YORK (AP) — Before Aryna Sabalenka could win the U.S. Open again, she needed to understand why she lost two Grand Slam finals this year.

Why she couldn’t put away Madison Keys at the Australian Open in January, then couldn’t finish off Coco Gauff at the French Open in June.

Sabalenka realized it was because she was allowing bad thoughts to undo her good tennis, and vowed while vacationing in Greece after Wimbledon that would no longer happen.

She was much stronger in that area Saturday, when she beat Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-6 (3) to become the first repeat champion at the U.S. Open since Serena Williams won three in a row from 2012-14.

Sooners defeat

Wolverines 24-13

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — John Mateer ran for two touchdowns and passed for another, and No. 18 Oklahoma defeated No. 15 Michigan 24-13. Mateer is a Washington State transfer who was playing in his first marquee game for the Sooners.

He passed for 270 yards and ran for 74. Oklahoma got a much-needed signature win for coach Brent Venables. Deion Burks caught seven passes for 101 yards and Jaren Kanak added five catches for 69 yards for the Sooners.

Freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood struggled for Michigan, completing 9 of 24 passes for 142 yards. Justice Haynes ran for 125 yards for the Wolverines.

Wisconsin pounds

Middle Tennessee

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Danny O’Neil went 23 of 27 for 283 yards with three touchdown passes in his first start for Wisconsin as the Badgers pulled away in the second half to beat Middle Tennessee 42-10 on Saturday.

O’Neil was starting because Billy Edwards Jr. sprained his knee in the second quarter of a 17-0 victory over Miami (Ohio) last week. O’Neil started 11 games for San Diego State last season.

Wisconsin only led 14-10 before outscoring Middle Tennessee 28-0 over the final 22 1/2 minutes.

Spartans nip

Boston College

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Aidan Chiles ran for a 3-yard touchdown and threw the winning 2-point conversion to Omari Kelly in double overtime to give Michigan State a 42-40 victory over Boston College. Boston College’s Turbo Richard ran 8 yards for a touchdown in the second overtime but Boston College (1-1) failed to convert the 2-point conversion.

Chiles then followed with the scoring run and the throw to Kelly to seal the win for the Spartans (2-0). He completed 19 of 29 passes for 231 yards and a career-high four touchdowns.

Starting at $3.50/week.
