Division winners

falter in Week 1

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL’s two No. 1 seeds last season are off to 0-1 starts, and the Baltimore Ravens blew a 15-point fourth-quarter lead.

Let the overreactions begin. The Detroit Lions were no contest for Jordan Love, Micah Parsons and the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. They joined the Kansas City Chiefs, who opened with a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil on Friday night. The Ravens became the fourth 2024 division winner to lose in Week 1 when Josh Allen rallied the Buffalo Bills to a 41-40 victory.

The Houston Texans were the other, falling to the Los Angeles Rams 14-9. The Texans, Bills, Lions, Chiefs and the rest of the teams have 16 more games to figure it out.

Poggi to lead

1-1 Wolverines

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said associate head coach Biff Poggi will lead the team during his two-game suspension.

Moore made the announcement Monday, less than a week before he is to miss a home game against Central Michigan and a road trip to Nebraska.

The second-year coach was suspended for two games this season as part of self-imposed sanctions for NCAA violations related to a sign-stealing investigation. The NCAA added a third game to the suspension, keeping Moore off the sideline for next year’s opener against Western Michigan.

Moore’s suspension starts Saturday and extends through next week’s game against the Cornhuskers. During the eight-day stretch, he is not permitted to participate in team-related activities.

The 23rd-ranked Wolverines (1-1) host the Chippewas (1-1) on Saturday after a 24-13 loss to Oklahoma. Freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood struggled for Michigan against the Sooners, completing 9 of 24 passes for 142 yards.

Badgers to face

No. 19 Alabama

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin quarterback Billy Edwards Jr.’s status is uncertain as the Badgers prepare to visit No. 19 Alabama on Sunday, coach Luke Fickell said.

Edwards didn’t play in the Badgers’ 42-10 victory over Middle Tennessee last weekend after he sprained his knee during the second quarter of their season-opening 17-0 triumph over Miami (Ohio).

Fickell said during his Monday news conference that “I don’t know a whole lot” about Edwards’ potential availability for Wisconsin’s game with Alabama (1-1).

“It’s a Monday,” Fickell said. “We’ll see as we continue to push forward in the week, but we’ll get obviously prepared either way.”

Danny O’Neil started in Edwards’ place and went 23 of 27 for 283 yards with three touchdown passes and an interception against Middle Tennessee.

“All in all, with what we asked him to do, I think he did a really good job,” Fickell said.

Brewers activate

Grant Anderson

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Right-hander Grant Anderson has come off the injured list to boost a Milwaukee Brewers bullpen that has been dealing with plenty of medical issues.

The Brewers announced before their Monday game with the Texas Rangers that they had activated Anderson and optioned right-hander Craig Yoho to Triple-A Nashville.

Anderson last pitched for Milwaukee on Aug. 23 before going on the injured list with tendinitis in his right ankle. The 28-year-old Anderson owns a 2-5 record and 2.87 earned run average in 57 appearances. He has struck out 66 over 62 2/3 innings.

Starting at $3.50/week.
