Wilson repeats
as WNBA MVP
(AP) — Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson has won the WNBA MVP for an unprecedented fourth time.
Wilson won the award last season as the unanimous choice and also in 2020 and 2022. Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie and Lauren Jackson all won the award three times.
Wilson led the league in scoring (23.4 points per game) as well as blocked shots (2.3) and helped the Aces win their last 16 regular-season games, earning the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.
QB Underwood
paces Wolverines
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Much of the focus leading into No. 21 Michigan’s visit to Nebraska centered on how Bryce Underwood would perform in his first Big Ten road opener after he struggled two weeks ago at Oklahoma.
Never mind his modest passing numbers in Saturday’s 30-27 win. The five-star freshman was more than good enough on a day he and running backs Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall turned long runs into touchdowns and the defense sacked Dylan Raiola seven times.
49ers star Bosa
out for season
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco star defensive end Nick Bosa tore the ACL in his right knee and will miss the rest of the season.
Bosa hurt his knee in the first half of a win over Arizona on Sunday and didn’t return to the game. Coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that more tests would be needed to determine the severity of the injury and the results Monday showed that Bosa had torn his ACL and his season was done.
CeeDee Lamb
has ankle sprain
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys say CeeDee Lamb sustained a high ankle sprain in a 31-14 loss to Chicago. The injury figures to sideline the star receiver at least one game and possibly more.
Lamb was injured on a running play the first time he touched the ball against the Bears. He lined up in the backfield and took a handoff.
Auburn’s Pearl
passes the torch
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl has announced his retirement months after taking the Tigers to another NCAA Final Four. Pearl’s 38-year-old son Steven Pearl is taking over as head coach of the Tigers.
In a 14-minute video posted on social media Monday, the 65-year-old Pearl says he feels it’s time to pass the torch. Pearl is leaving Auburn as the school’s winningest men’s coach after taking the Tigers to their only two Final Fours.
Backup QBs
find NFL success
(AP) Backup quarterbacks had a big day Sunday. Carson Wentz and Marcus Mariota were sharp in leading their teams to lopsided wins as fill-in starters.
Mac Jones overcame a costly turnover and engineered a game-winning final drive. Wentz was 14 of 20 for 173 yards and two touchdowns in Minnesota’s 48-10 rout over Cincinnati. Mariota was 15 of 21 for 207 yards and one TD, and also ran for 40 yards and a score, in Washington’s 41-24 win against Las Vegas.
Jones completed 27 of 41 passes for 284 yards with one TD and one interception in San Francisco’s 16-15 win.
