Hoosiers to

face Ducks

(AP) — So much has changed since the first meeting between Fernando Mendoza and Dante Moore. It was two years ago, before the Pac-12’s demise.

Mendoza was quarterback at California, while Moore started for UCLA in the final game of the regular season. Cal went on to win 33-7. Mendoza, who started the season as Cal’s third-string QB, threw for a pair of touchdowns with a pair of interceptions. Moore was also picked off twice.

Mendoza moved on to Indiana, and Moore landed at Oregon. Tonight, the two meet for a second time this season when the Hoosiers play the Ducks in the CFP semifinals.

Dolphins fire

Mike McDaniel

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins have fired coach Mike McDaniel following a 7-10 season in which Miami missed the playoffs for the second straight year. The decision Thursday ends McDaniel’s four-year tenure in Miami, a period defined by soaring expectations that ultimately went unfulfilled.

The Dolphins went 35-33 under McDaniel, reaching the playoffs in his first two seasons but losing in the first round each time.

The Detroit Lions, meanwhile, have reportedly reached out to McDaniel about their offensive coordinator opening.

Snowboarder Kim

injures shoulder

(AP) — Two-time Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim says she dislocated her shoulder in training and doesn’t know whether she’ll be able to compete at the Winter Games in Italy next month.

Kim posted footage of her fall on the halfpipe in Switzerland, where the world’s top snowboarders compete later this month in a key pre-Olympic tune-up. She remains optimistic and has full range in the shoulder and expects to know more after tests today.

Glenn Hall

dies at 94

(AP) — Glenn Hall, a Hockey Hall of Famer whose ironman streak of 502 starts as a goaltender remains an NHL record, has died. He was 94.

Nicknamed “Mr. Goalie,” Hall worked to stop pucks at a time when players at his position were bare-faced, before masks of any kind became commonplace. He did it as well as just about anyone of his generation, which stretched from the days of the Original Six into the expansion era.

A spokesperson for the Chicago Blackhawks confirmed the team received word of Hall’s death from his family. A league historian in touch with Hall’s son, Pat, said Hall died at a hospital in Stony Plain, Alberta, on Wednesday.

A pioneer of the butterfly style of goaltending of dropping to his knees, Hall backstopped Chicago to the Stanley Cup in 1961. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as most valuable player of the playoffs in 1968 with St. Louis when the Blues reached the final before losing to Montreal. He was the second of just six Conn Smythe winners from a team that did not hoist the Cup.

His run of more than 500 games in net is one of the most untouchable records in sports, given how the position has changed in the decades since. Second in history is Alec Connell with 257 from 1924-30.

Levin to

advise Brewers

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Former Minnesota Twins general manager Thad Levine has joined the Milwaukee Brewers organization as a special adviser.

Levine spent eight seasons with the Twins and left at the end of the 2024 campaign. The Twins reached the playoffs in four of his eight seasons.

The 54-year-old joins a Brewers organization seeking its fourth consecutive NL Central title.

WNBPA and WNBA

negotiate

NEW YORK (AP) — WNBPA vice president Breanna Stewart says the players’ union and WNBA will not agree to another collective bargaining agreement extension after the deadline passes Friday night.

Stewart told reporters Thursday that the players would continue to negotiate in good faith. The league wouldn’t confirm that the two sides won’t reach an extension by the deadline.

A WNBA spokesman said the league would “continue to negotiate in good faith with the goal of reaching a deal as quickly as possible.”

The league and the players have had two previous extensions and have met in person several times this week. Any stalled negotiations could delay the start of the 2026 season.

Pistons get

past Bulls

DETROIT (AP) — Isaiah Stewart scored a career-high 31 points to help the short-handed Detroit Pistons beat the Chicago Bulls 108-93 on Wednesday night.

Detroit won for the fourth time in five games despite playing without All-Star Cade Cunningham (wrist) and fellow starters Tobias Harris (hip) and Jalen Duren (ankle).

Stewart, who had his previous best of 26 points against Memphis on Nov. 3, scored 11 points in the first quarter. Two-way player Daniss Jenkins added six rebounds and a career-high 15 assists.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Stephen Curry had 31 points, highlighted by a step-back 3-pointer with 26 seconds left, and added seven assists and seven rebounds to help the Golden State Warriors beat the Milwaukee Bucks 120-113 on Wednesday night.

De’Anthony Melton added 22 points off the bench.

Giannis Anteokounmpo had 34 points, 10 rebounds and five assists while Kevin Porter Jr. contributed 15 points, nine assists and four rebounds for the Bucks, who couldn’t withstand Golden State’s 18 made 3s and a 53-42 rebounding disadvantage.
